From Our Shores to the World, Kenya’s Blue Moment
As the monsoon winds shift, the eyes of the global marine community are turning toward our shores as Kenya hosts the 11th Our Ocean Conference this June under the theme Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.
This is a defining moment for East Africa gathering of world leaders, scientists, and activists committed to measurable action for marine health.
The Art of Curating an Expedition
Expeditions evoke exploration, adventure, and impact. My life’s work is rooted in the belief that when people truly connect with the sea, their perception shifts, and their involvement deepens.
To us, an expedition is a curated journey with a specific mission dedicated to the exploration and protection of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). This can be to fill critical knowledge gaps at sea, leverage global phenomena, or provide bespoke experiences for families and select groups. From swimming, diving, free diving, fly-fishing, and sea turtle conservation to educational immersions, each expedition builds ocean skills, literacy, and conservation awareness. We specialise in four distinct pillars, each designed to foster a different kind of connection to our blue planet:
Private Expeditions: These are intimate, bespoke experiences for families that contribute to marine protection, learning about six marine ecosystems, and encountering ocean life few get to see be it in Kenya, Tanzania or the wider region.
Group Expeditions: High-energy explorations tailored for social clubs, activity groups, and organisations seeking collective impact. For instance, free diving, swim and fly-fishing groups are already planning their expedition for 2027, each one contributing to science and the foundation. They can also be ccademic immersions designed for schools and universities to turn the ocean into a living classroom. This year, top universities will be joining us on learning and conservation expeditions, and even some booking for 2027.
Science-Based Expeditions: Research-driven journeys aligned with natural phenomena or designed to help fill critical marine science data gaps.
Upcoming 2027 departures include Maldives (manta rays and underwater photography),
Madagascar (whale shark research) and Socotra Underwater (building on 1997– present data).
We are in the developing stages for Northern Kenya (marine mammals), Tanzania (marine protected areas), reach out to us for updates on this once finalised.
Each expedition can include a land component, bringing conservation initiatives, cultural insights, and the region’s landscapes and wildlife to life. Our expeditions are fully supported and expert-led. For example, the 14-Day Swim Adventure from Watamu to Kilifi features a dual-vessel system: a mother ship for nutrition, a sweeper dinghy for safety, and a professional in-water safety team accompanying swimmers every mile.
Planning for the Socotra Underwater 2027 Expedition is already underway, with experienced local suppliers and researchers creating a science-based journey where guests contribute to vital data collection. The goal is clear: to help fill critical knowledge gaps essential for the survival of this unique UNESCO World Heritage site.
This is what it takes to design an expedition with purpose. Get in touch if inspired!
A Call to Action for Big Blue Day
The Seas4Life Foundation is officially calling on schools, organisations, and corporates to join us for Big Blue Day!
What is it? Big Blue Day is our signature immersive ocean literacy and fundraising experience. We’ve designed it to bridge the gap between "knowing" the ocean and "loving" the ocean.
While rooted and timed with the global celebration of World Ocean Day on 8th June, Big Blue Day is intentionally flexible, giving communities the opportunity to engage in ocean education and action at any point around this time in a way that works best for them.
If you are a school or a corporate team looking to inspire the next generation of marine biologists and dive into sustainability, we have a format for you:
Ocean Art Day: Unleashing creativity for the coast.
Blue Sports Challenge: Getting active for ocean health.
Geography & Climate Day: Understanding the science of our changing tides.
Corporate Ocean Literacy Workshops: Aligning business with the Blue Economy.
Want to host a Big Blue Day? Contact us below to receive our partnership deck and agenda and learn how your organisation can support our Discover Ocean community initiative, creating access and opportunities for local children to engage with the ocean.
Ending Thoughts
The most rewarding part of this work is seeing the impact on children through Big Blue Day, watching them understand the ocean as a life-support system that requires both our protection and our passion.
For those traveling to Nairobi for the conference, or for your own journey, we would love to welcome you at our homestay, Ol Losowan, in the wilds of Nairobi. Every stay supports the work of the Seas4Life Foundation and offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the ocean and its wonders.
