CONNECTING you TO THE WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN

OUR COMMITMENT

Building Ocean Literacy, Expanding Access to the Sea, and Strengthening Conservation Efforts Across the Western Indian Ocean

We believe meaningful stewardship begins with connection. Through education, access to the sea, and support for conservation, the Foundation helps reconnect people with the ocean while strengthening the ecosystems and communities that depend on it. Funded through Seas4Life Expeditions and a growing network of partners, our work creates lasting impact across the Kenyan coast and beyond.

Our PROGRAMMES

Discover Ocean Initiative (DOI)

This is our flagship programme; a hands-on, structured initiative designed to connect coastal school children with the ocean. It is rooted and aligned with UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy framework and localised to Kenya’s six diverse marine ecosystems. For many participants, this is their first direct experience of the marine environment.

Delivered in five progressive stages, it builds confidence, curiosity, and practical understanding of ocean ecosystems:

  • In-school ocean learning sessions

  • Beach clean-ups that explore human impact

  • Rock pooling to discover coastal biodiversity

  • Swimming lessons focused on safety and confidence

  • Guided snorkelling exploring the underwater world

Big Blue DAy

This is our signature ocean literacy and fundraising experience designed for schools everywhere regardless of their location. We believe that you don’t need to live by the coast to care for it. Even for students located far inland, Big Blue Day provides a powerful way to celebrate our oceans and understand our deep, everyday connection to them.

While rooted in the global celebration of World Ocean Day, Big Blue Day is intentionally flexible, allowing schools to engage in ocean action at a time and in a way that works best for them by providing a complete suite of resources to plug into your existing curriculum.

“The opportunity for Seas4Life to build connections with, and between, conservationists and coastal communities has been truly rewarding. The passion for the ocean that drives Seas4Life also drives the people we are proud to call our partners. They are the ones who have made and continue to make the Kenyan coast so special.

As we move into 2026, Seas4Life is more determined than ever to ensure that this connection to the ocean continues to grow. The passion and potential we have already seen in the youngest generations fills us with pride and hope for a better future, for the ocean, for the communities that surround it and for humanity as a whole”
